The senior EKG technician works closely with the stress labs exercise physiologist and nurse practitioner of the EKG and Stress Testing Lab to provide care and services as directed. The senior EKG technician assures that office functions are maintained, all records are completed appropriately and equipment and supplies are ordered and received. Other responsibilities include performing EKG recordings, processing EKGs for the physician reading panel, and performing Holter monitor hook-ups. The senior EKG technician is responsible for training all existing and new staff that performs EKG and/or Stress Lab services and coordinates with administrative supervisor to assure proper coverage for EKG services. Edits, processes, archives and educates staff with adult and pediatric 12/15 lead ECGs utilizing the MUSE archive System.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepares equipment and supplies for specific tests. Performs 12 and 15 -lead EKG tests according to department policy and procedure
- Communicates with exercise physiologist, nurse practitioner, and clinical engineering regarding the performance of cables, connections, and equipment used in the labs. Assists exercise physiologist in coordinating and documenting equipment maintenance as appropriate
- Prepares patient for exercise and or pharmacologic stress test, to include the following: electrode placement, skin prep, blood pressure cuff, oxygenation probe placement, as well as any other patient monitoring devices
- Responsible for processing, editing and providing preliminary findings from holter event monitors and preparing the data for the interpreting physician
- Performs skills as necessary for holter monitor testing and maintenance, including cleansing/sterilizing equipment, ordering of supplies, coordinating and maintaining "shipping" account, and instructing/educating the patient
- Also may perform ambulatory blood pressure monitoring or educational instruction as needed by various departments within the enterprise
- Edits, processes and archives adult and pediatric 12/15 lead ECGs utilizing the MUSE archive system
- Contacts and schedules patients in the Apollo CardioSchedule and APeX electronic medical record for treadmills, Holter Monitors, Event Monitors (LifeWatch, Zio patch, etc.), ICGs and ambulatory BP monitoring
- Oversees all EKG activities and schedules. Keeps supervisor informed of current issues
- Oversees patient scheduling and assures that office staff are scheduling patients appropriately to meet inpatient and outpatient needs
- Maintains current knowledge of Medical Center Code White & Blue procedures
- Demonstrates professionalism and the ability to interact appropriately with patients and other staff
- Provide training for other technicians and hospital staff with EKG carts and processing of EKG'
- Provide training for de-centralized units in all facets of EKG acquisition (i.e. Nurses, PCA's,etc)
- Performs daily check of emergency equipment/supplies (i.e. crash cart) under the direction of the exercise physiologist and nurse practitioner
- Works with management in establishing quality controls, collecting quality assurance data, and disseminating appropriate information to staff when necessary
- Adheres to policies and procedures for the technical and clinical operation of the departmen
- Demonstrates knowledge of organization's values. Exercises everyday P.R.I.D.E
- Maintains knowledge of and adheres to all applicable Medical Center and unit specific infection control policies
- Assists as needed in clerical activities and in the processing of charges
