The Certified Anesthesia Tech assists the licensed anesthesia provider in the acquisition, preparation and application of equipment and supplies required for the administration of anesthesia. Adapts well and flexible to changing situations, and demonstrates effective communication and teamwork skills. Provides support in anesthesia for routine and complex surgical cases by preparing and maintaining patient monitoring devices and anesthesia delivery systems before, during and after anesthesia. Responsibilities include but not limited to assisting the licensed anesthesia provider in various settings, performing duties under the direct supervision of the licensed anesthesia provider, providing support for routine surgical cases through preparation and maintenance of patient equipment and anesthesia delivery systems before, during and after anesthesia, and cleaning, disinfecting, stocking, ordering and maintaining the routine anesthesia equipment and supplies. Demonstrates the knowledge of cardiopulmonary, vascular anatomy, physiology, infection control, pharmacology, and medical electronics.
Provides assistance for invasive and non-invasive techniques (excluding the catheter insertion) which includes the following: direct systemic arterial, right arterial, patient monitoring and set up for anesthetic and respiratory gas, blood draw and placing EKG electrodes, blood pressure cuff and pulse oximetry on the patient.
Assists the Anesthesiologist in difficult airway intubation by providing video laryngoscopy equipment and/or fiber optic intubation scope as requested. Knowledgeable in the techniques used in securing an open airway, e.g., jaw thrust, jaw lift or tongue hold.
Executes the Malignant Hyperthermia protocol as it pertains to the preparation of the anesthesia machine.
Awareness of appropriate procedure to properly respond to codes and initiate the proper procedures to assist the anesthesiologist and OR staff.
Maintains, stocks, cleans and organizes anesthesia carts. This includes but not limited to removal of unnecessary items not included in the anesthesia cart and machine supply.
Prepares, assembles, and primes the packaged transducer, slitter, and extension tubing with the flush bags.
Appropriately sets up the room with all equipment and supplies needed for the implementing plan of care for each patient procedure. Trouble shoots and replaces anesthesia equipment as needed prior to all procedures and when applicable escalate repair to Biomed. Performs necessary procedures to ensure all instruments and equipment meet all required regulations(FDA) for the safe and accurate operation of these devices. Demonstrates clinical knowledge of anesthesia equipment and current technologies. Ability to act as a resource to operating room staff in the area of anesthesia equipment and procedures.
Controls and maintains all perioperative anesthesia equipment and devices including but not limited to low and high level disinfection and able to demonstrate competency on the pre-cleaning and disinfection protocol for these devices as per manufacturer instructions for use (IFU).
Other duties as assigned.
Education:
High School Diploma/GED, minimum.
Assoc. Degree/College Diploma, preferred.
Experience:
Two (2) years of related experience in a healthcare environment, minimum.
Licenses/Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS), required.
Certified Anesthesia Tech from American Society of Anesthesia Technician and Technologist (ASATT), required.
